18th Annual Abbotsford Police Challenge Run

20 Sep 08

The Abbotsford Police Challenge Run started 17 years ago to raise funds for British Columbia (BC) Special Olympics.  Since its inception, the number of participants and sponsors has increased to the point where the Abbotsford Police Challenge has become the premier event of its kind in the Fraser Valley.

The Challenge is a 10k road race, which also has a 5k starting at the same time.  There were 261 finishers in the 10k event and 539 finishers in the 5k, which was a mixture of runners, joggers, walkers and buggy pushers.  No numbers were issued (due to a printing problem) but chip timing ensured everyone was accurately timed on crossing the start and finish lines.  The 10k course split away from the 5k route around 2.5k and met up again on the final straight.

Before the event there was a centre stage warm up.  Post race entertainment included a secondary school choir, drum players and dancers.  There was also hot dogs, pizza, ice cream and fruit, all freely available from sponsors.  Some of the larger spot prizes included 2 mountain bikes, a Playstation 3, buggy and cooking utensils.

Dave Philpot is currently staying in Abbotsford until Dec 08.  This is his first Canadian race, finishing 1st in the 45 to 49 age category.  The weather was damp with very little wind, basically ideal for running.  Halfway was a demanding 1k hill, which broke the pace a little but Dave still managed a sub 40.  Not a bad Canadian start (although he didn't win any larger spot prizes).

Dave's next race is The Iron Lung 20k dated 28 Sep.
