 Nairn Highland Games - 16 Aug 08

Half Marathon

The Nairn Half Marathon is a part of the Nairn Highland Games.  Starting and finishing within the Games arena, it travels by the beach and harbour before heading through open countryside along a fairly flat course.  There were 4 water stations along the way, and a souvenir, medal and goody bag are provided for all finishers.

Well done to Edek Rej who completed the course with a time of 1:48:09.  Edek was the 69th finisher out of 155.  Well done!

History of the Games

Nairn is one of the largest amateur gatherings in the North.  The first Nairn Highland Games took place 141 years ago in 1867 and this year the Games took place on Saturday 16th August.  This was the 131st Nairn Highland Games!

The first Highland Games were held more than a thousand years ago, prompted by clan chiefs and kings.  Events covered a variety of sporting, martial and religious purposes.

The Clan Chiefs used the games to recruit people - race winners made good messengers at a time when there were no proper roads.

No meetings were held during the two world wars, but the games were as popular as ever when restarted after World War II.  There were some changes to the games thereafter, the biggest coming in 1952 when the amateur and women's events were introduced for the first time.
