Rubber Ducky Half Marathon
19 Oct 08

The Rubber Ducky Half Marathon was two laps of Burnaby Lake (check the map below), just outside Vancouver in British Columbia.  This lake trail was mostly a very twisty gravel path with small undulations and almost completely sheltered by trees.  There were also a few steps and a couple of wooden walkways to tackle.  Although the gravel ground appeared very firm it was quite spongy in places, apparently the area had been marshland and the paths are still settling.  Not a course for PBs but certainly a test of running ability.  There was also a single lap race of 7 miles taking place, half hour behind the half start, which made the 2nd lap a little more challenging when chasing them through.

Why Is It Called The Rubber Ducky?

Saving ducks is part of the Wildlife Rescue Association (WRA) and this event helps to raise money for their good cause.  It also sounds good.

Course Map

The weather was mostly cold and misty with the sun just breaking through towards the end.  Dave Philpot finished 2nd in the Half Marathon, which had 177 finishers.  He finished  in a very commendable time of 1:26:50, achieving his aim of sub 1:30 on this type of course.  No doubt the Canadian air is having a positive impact on his training.
