RRR report from CANADA

BMO Vancouver Marathon

3rd May 09

2926 Finishers

Starting time 07:30 and the sun was rising, at least these early starts ensured it was relatively cool for the first few hours.  There were head winds to tackle on route and the climbing was long and gradual, especially over bridges.  Vancouver is a beautiful modern city with the world famous Stanley Park attached to it but this event isn't a patch on the London Marathon (unbiased opinion).  One distinct thing missing was the crowds.  On a very positive note there were plenty of water, 'Gateraid' and gel stations on route.  Medals were awarded to all finishers and there was plenty of food to munch into at the finish area.

There were other events going on, a half marathon and 8k, which no doubt helped to reduce the marathon field down to around 3000.  If your marathon training didn't go to well you could also change events during registration.  The half marathon attracted 5979 finishers and no doubt a much easier option.  The winner of the marathon won in under 2:29, the course may not be as fast as London but the prize money should have attracted some quality times.  However, this marathon took place a week after London and 2 weeks behind Boston, perhaps this marathon is just a little close on the calendar to attract top athletes.

Dave Philpot entered this marathon with only 7 weeks training to go, 6 if you take off the last rest week.  His main target was sub 3:15, which he felt was achievable with some intensive training.  The first couple of weeks were very heavy going and no doubt over trained a few occasions.  On race day the tactic was to push for a 1:30 first half, leaving 1:45 for the second.  Judging by the result it seemed to work and Dave now has guaranteed London Marathon entry for the next 2 years.  Is he likely to run any other marathons this year?  Not likely.
