RRR report from CANADA

25th Vancouver Sun Run

19 Apr 09

55,858 Finishers.

Not a 10k for PBs, unless you can start in the first 50 rows.  Weather conditions were ideal and no wind was detected.  All I can really remember about the course was the dodging, weaving and having to slow up on many occasions.  Many of the so called 'seeded' places in front of me weren't very well seeded and according to my Garmin I ran 6.44 miles.

No doubt the route was scenic, especially while running through Stanley Park, but the sheer volume of runners put a blockade on that (and I wasn't wearing my glasses either).  Hardly any crowds watching and cheering, I think they were all out running/walking.  The finish was outside the BC Place Stadium, where many of the finishers ended up inside for post race refreshments, live music and prize giving.  This place will be used for the Winter Olympic ceremonies next year.  It's also next door to the Vancouver Canucks Hockey Ice Rink (who are doing quite well at the moment).

Little disappointing was no finishing memento or goody bag.  For an event this size and it being the 25th year there was nothing at the finish apart from a chip time.  However we had T Shirts issued before the event (drawn up by a famous artist).

Last year this event pulled in over 59,000 finishers, the 3rd biggest running/walking event in the world.  There wasn't any mention what the other 2 events are.  The event reminded me of the Great North Run, however it's called Great for a very good reason (not including the finishing medal and goody bag).  Would I run the Sun Run again?  Very unlikely (unless I was in back in Canada, my entry was paid for and put in the Elite category).
